Social Networking sites ‘aren’t that deep’

I am a social networking fanatic. I have a twitter, tumblr, facebook, instagram you name it and now ofcourse a wordpress. It is very interesting to me how within a click we can be connected to other people across the globe BUT I think our generation has become the social networking generation. I don’t think I’ve met someone my age that isn’t on a social networking site and it has come to my attention that people are taking social networking TOO seriously.

So today I was on my Instagram looking at pictures as you and one of the people I follow tagged about 50 things under his photo to maximise the amount of likes he would get. It just makes me question the identity of our generation. I won’t lie to you I have tagged various things to get likes on Instagram and then stopped because I realised: 1.The amount of likes I get on Instagram doesn’t determine my beauty, worth or value and 2. My identity is in Christ not likes or followers. We are more concerned with how many followers and likes we have on Instagram than how we do at school. The amount of followers you have signifies your importance as a human being. I’ve heard some people say ‘I don’t follow people who have less than 50 followers’ it’s as if social networking sites are like secondary school ESPECIALLY on Tumblr.

You have your geeks, populars, jocks, emo’s, goths, hipster and sadly bullies. Cyber bullying has increased dramatically over the last 5 years and has led to teenagers self-harming and suicide.

In addition to this we have ‘Black twitter’ on Twitter (which some people say I’m a part of, but I don’t agree)”#TeamPreeAndRetweet which is a majority of Black people (and some white and Asian) tweeting on various topics daily. Ironically enough the phrase ‘it’s not that deep’ is used by SO many people on twitter when a joke gets too serious they claim to say ‘it’s not that deep’ well is not? Consequently the phrase ‘it’s not that deep’ is usually used when someone gets ‘corned’. Corned is a phrase to explain when a lot of people are throwing insults to one person and this result to the person’s mentions going insane. There isn’t really a distinct definition of ‘corned’ but that’s how I’d explain it.

I just think people should chill out, tweet, instagram, tumblr what they want to and be on their way. It’s really not that deep…
